Course Objectives This is mainly a course on fundamental concepts of health psychology. It is aimed to introduce topics of health psychology research and methodology applied in health psychology research. Reviewing established theory and recent research, comprehensive health perceptions and beliefs, and behaviors including smoking, exercise, diet and health screening will be discussed. Also, pain, pain management, coping with terminal illness ans adjustment to chronic illness will be discussed with supporting research articles. Finally, chronic illnesses will be discussed in terms of stigma, health related quality of life and depression.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • •Will able to define the psychophysiological basis of health and illness.
  • •Will able to explain health professionals-patients communation and problems in this area.
  • •Will able to define, evidence-based psychological interventions that emphasize the role of stress on health.
  • •Will able to explain affects of pain on psychological well being, different pain theories and pain management methods.
  • •Will know current ethical standards and legal responsibilities of health psychologists, including those pertaining to psychological practice and research.
  • •Will able to explain the effects of interaction with medical professionals in practice and its effects on adherence.
  • •Will able to explain why we engage in problematic health behaviours such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol to excess, eating poorly, what we can do to change those behaviours, and what the health costs are if we do not change our poor health behaviors.
Course Description The aim of this course is to introduce the basic concepts of health psychology which includes illness, adaptation to illness, health related quality of life, health behaviors and basic research methods that widely applied in health psychology.
