Course Objectives Teach how hospitals could manage the external and internal disasters and emergencies is the main aim of the course.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • A. External disasters and emergencies: 1. To build a disaster/emergency preparedness system in hospitals, 2. To manage acute phase of the disaster/emergency situation by responding accurate and timely decisions, 3. To conduct post-disaster activities including assessment of the responding phase and planning necessary improvements.
  • B. Internal disasters and emergencies: 1. To conduct risk analysis and determine necessary steps to be taken. 2. To evacuate patients and hospital staffs injured due to incidents like fire, explosion, collapses emerged in the hospital, 3. To build a system for managing triage zone and transferring patients and other causalities based on their needs, 4. To develop and implement a recovery plan post-disaster phase
Course Description External and internal disasters and emergencies may emerge in hospitals and/or have effects on hospitals are examined In the course. Moreover, the methods, technics, tools for preparedness for disaster and emergencies , responding to disasters and emergencies and post- disaster/emergency assessment and resilience are analyzed based on literature and best practices.

1 Introduction: The scope and content of the course, teaching methodologies will be used during the semester
2 Managing unexpected: Definition of Disasters, crises and emergencies have effects on healthcare settings. Students are supposed to examine The Ministry of Health Hospital Disaster and Emergency Situation Management Planning requirements
3 External disasters and emergencies: Classification of external disasters, (Man-made vs Natural; slow- effect vs rapid-effect disasters, types of external disasters and emergencies Students are expected to watch two documentaries: Bhopal Chemical Explosion Disaster and Fujiyama Nuclear Leaks Disaster
4 Internal disaster and hospital emergencies: Definitions, types and possible complication each types
5 Disaster Management conceptualization and disaster management frameworks.
6 Analysis of hospital disaster /emergency situation management system documents: The policy , procedures, proses flowcharts and other documents
7 Analysis of hospital disaster /emergency situation management system documents: The policy , procedures, proses flowcharts and other documents Students are required to examine İzmir Ekonomi Üniversite Hastanesi Hospital Disaster and emergency Plan
8 Pre-disaster phase: Risk analysis and preparedness of disasters and emergencies
9 Midterm exam
10 Responding Phase: Taking appropriate and effective measures to reduce severity of the incidents, evacuating patients and staff who injured because of the incidents, planning care of the patient and injured staff based on triage system. Observation: Students will attend to İzmir Ekonomi Üniverstesi Hastanesi evacuation planning , implementing and assessment meetings as observers.
11 Past disaster phase: Assesing and analyzing weaknesses; planning and implementing necessary improvements in hospitals

13 The importance of human factor in case of disaster and emergencies: Building an Individual reflectivity and mindfulness competencies in healthcare professionals.

15 Practice: Based on a scenario a disaster management phases will be analyzed in the class.
